I Made the Ugliest PlayStation 5 Using Sony’s New ‘Deep Earth’ Colors

Each panel on the PlayStation 5 can be swapped out individually, so we decided to go with something a little off the rails.Photo: Angel Fajardo / GizmodoWhat wasn’t obvious about the new slimmer version of the PlayStation 5 was that each individual panel can be removed individually. Unlike the original PS5, the black bar running through the center on the new version separates each panel into four pieces rather than two. This means you can make interesting designs using Sony’s new “Deep Earth” collection panels. And hey, it

There’s gold (and lithium and cobalt) in all those EV battery packs

There’s a bit of a battery manufacturing boom going on. In 2021, battery manufacturing in the United States totaled approximately 55 gigawatt-hours’ worth of cells, or roughly enough batteries to produce 700,000 EVs. By 2030, that production is expected to top 1,000GWh, growing by nearly a factor of 20. Billions of dollars in incentives such as the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law have spurred the creation of a so-called Battery Belt across the southeastern US, all fuel to fire an anticipated…

Tim Cook Tells Dua Lipa That Kids Aren’t Mining iPhone’s Cobalt

November 18, 2023 @ 3:33 PM Apple CEO Tim Cook sat down with Dua Lipa for a rare podcast interview on her show “Dua Lipa: At Your Service.” The pair covered a wide range of topics, but the one that’s drawn listeners’ attention is Lipa being the first to publicly ask Cook about the use of child labor to mine cobalt for “my new iPhone 15,” a question the CEO was willing to answer… kind of. Lipa said, “I came across some, like, I guess distressing articles about young kids mining cobalt in the Democratic Republic…

Microsoft Announces New Maia 100 and Cobalt 100 Chips

The Maia and Cobalt custom chips will be available within Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure. Microsoft will make two new chips available next year, the tech giant announced at the Microsoft Ignite conference on Nov. 15. The Microsoft Azure Maia 100 is designed for AI workloads, and the Microsoft Cobalt 100 CPU is designed for general compute workloads on Microsoft cloud. Microsoft unveils first AI chip, Maia 100, and Cobalt CPU

The Microsoft Azure Cobalt CPU. MicrosoftThe two chips, Maia 100 and Cobalt 100, are fed by 200 gigabit-per-second networking, said Microsoft, and can deliver 12.5 gigabytes per second of data throughput.Microsoft is the last of the Big Three cloud vendors to offer custom silicon for cloud and AI. Google pioneered the race to custom silicon with its Tensor Processing Unit, or TPU, in 2016. Amazon followed suit with a slew of chips including Graviton, Trainium, and Inferentia.  A custom-built rack for the Maia 100

How much cobalt can be mined in the US? Study examines domestic mining site in Idaho

Global cobalt mining and processing facilities. Credit: Geology (2023). DOI: 10.1130/G51160.1 A new study published in Geology evaluates the potential for cobalt extraction from the Idaho Cobalt Belt (ICB) of east-central Idaho, using a detailed study of the Iron Creek deposit. The ICB hosts the second-largest known domestic resource of the critical mineral cobalt, one of the key ingredients in many rechargeable batteries…

macOS is being targeted by ‘Cobalt Strike’ that opens your machine up to hackers

Cybersecurity company SentinelOne has reported today (opens in new tab) about a new Mac virus that when opened on your Mac will give hackers access to your machine. The virus, named 'Geacon', is a version of the Cobalt Strike virus, used against Windows users for some time. Now, this new version of the virus can be implanted on Mac users' machines, letting hackers in with what is commonly known as a trojan horse – an innocuous-seeming file that ultimately allows hackers to access your machine. What does it do?Targeting…

Apple commits to using more recycled cobalt in its devices

Apple has new plans to use more recycled metals in its devices. By 2025, the company plans to use 100 percent recycled cobalt in the batteries it designs. By the same date, it says magnets in its devices will contain entirely recycled rare earth elements. And circuit boards Apple designs will also be made with entirely recycled tin soldering and gold plating. The tech industry has been under scrutiny for years for its hunger for mined materials, which inflicts harm on people and the environment. Apple and other companies…
