Coffee Density and Weight Loss in Roasting | by Robert McKeon Aloe | Sep, 2022

Coffee Data ScienceCasual Data ExplorationI have been collecting roast statistics for a few years, but I haven’t used them for anything. I didn’t feel like I had enough data until now to plot it. So I have initial data on density and weight loss from roasting green coffee. All of this data should be considered exploratory data, and I hope they inspire you and me to better collect data on roasting. All images by authorMost of my roasts were blends of two bean types, so it isn’t worthwhile at the moment to split the data by…

ROC and Precision-Recall Curves, Probabilities Distribution, and Density Plots in the binclass-tools Python Package | by Luca Zavarella |…

Standard plots for binary classifications are now available in the binclass-tools package(image by the author)I recently announced the release of a Python package useful for the analysis of binary classifications. In particular, the need to develop this package arose from the difficulty of analyzing imbalanced binary classifications. Using interactive plots for confusion matrix and cost analysis proved to be essential for studying model performance, so the Python binclass-tools package was created, as I highlighted in my…

Monte Carlo Simulation. Part 3: Histograms & Density Plots | by Darío Weitz | Aug, 2022

Part 3: Histograms & Density PlotsPhoto by British Library on UnsplashA Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is a sampling experiment whose aim is to estimate the distribution of a quantity of interest that depends on one or more stochastic input variables. The development of an MCS involves three basic steps:1. Set up a predictive model clearly identifying the dependent variable (outcome, unknown quantity of interest, function to be evaluated) and the independent variables (random input variables).2. Identify the probability…

China’s Catl to develop new battery materials to improve energy density, says Chairman

China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (Catl )is working on new battery materials that can improve energy density by 10% to 20% compared to iron phosphate batteries, the company's chairman said, as the battery giant scrambles to retain its top position amid competition. The new material technology known as M3P can enable an electric vehicle to run 700 km (430 miles) per charge combined with Catl's next generation of battery pack technology, Zeng Yuqun said at the World New Energy Vehicle Congress in Beijing.…

Influit moves to commercialize its ultra-high density liquid batteries

Illinois Tech spinoff Influit Energy says it's coming out of stealth mode to commercialize a rechargeable electrofuel – a non-flammable, fast-refuelling liquid flow battery that already carries 23% more energy than lithium batteries, at half the cost.Very much targeted at vehicles and aircraft, Influit's "nanoelectrofuels" offer an alternative to current battery tech with what appears to be a pretty compelling list of pros and cons. The company pitches its tech as a new type of flow battery – we've written plenty about…

Powdered sodium battery design promises a 15% leap in energy density

With real uncertainty clouding the world's supply of lithium, alternative battery chemistries will be crucial as we continue our uptake of electric vehicles and mobile devices. One exciting candidate in this space is sodium-ion, and a research team in Russia has developed a novel battery of this ilk that boasts some impressive energy density, and may also be resistant to low temperatures.Sodium-ion batteries are gaining attention as a more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion, owing to the relative abundance and…

Micron’s 232-Layer NAND Paves Way for 200TB SSDs

Memory and data storage producer Micron have begun production and shipment of the world’s first 232-layer NAND in Singapore, which marks the first time a NAND manufacturer has surpassed 200 layers. This opens the door for the world’s first 200TB SSDs. For comparison, even the flashiest personal computers usually stop at 2TB of storage, and the current largest SSD in the world is Nimbus Data’s 100TB ExaDrive.Prior to the innovation, the company’s NAND topped out at 176-layers. The new NAND is also 50% faster than Micron’s…

This week’s second hydrogen powder promises double the density

Stir this silicon-based powder into water, and hydrogen will bubble out, ready for immediate use. Hong Kong company EPRO Advance Technology (EAT) says its Si+ powder offers an instant end to the difficulties of shipping and storing green energy. This is the second powdered hydrogen advance we've learned about this week, designed to solve the same problems: transporting hydrogen is difficult, dangerous and expensive, whether the costs are for cryogenic cooling in a liquid hydrogen system, or for compression to around 700…

By 2030, this major Tesla supplier hopes to increase battery density by 20%

Panasonic Energy Co, a major Tesla supplier, is working on new technology to increase battery energy density by a fifth by 2030, the Japanese company's chief technology officer told Reuters. That gain, if achieved, could boost the driving range of a Model Y, for example, by over 100 km (62 miles) with the same sized battery pack. Alternatively, it could allow manufacturers to create roomier and possibly lighter electric vehicles (EVs) while keeping driving range unchanged. As more automakers roll out EV models, investors…
