A local’s guide to DIA restaurants

Sure, you can hit up a Dunkin Donuts, a Starbucks or a McDonald’s at Denver International Airport — and sometimes it’s traveling that gives us license to be bad like that — but a better option is to try some of Denver’s homegrown food and beverages from local businesses. While these restaurants, coffee shops and breweries don’t actually own or run their airport branches — that is done by large concessionaires — many of them do take an active role in maintaining the quality and consistency of their offerings. Here’s a…

Denver airport food from new Colorado restaurants feed DIA travelers

When Justin Cucci would fly out of Denver International Airport more than 10 years ago, he’d usually pack his own food. “As a traveler, I was always let down by the food and the lack of Denver representation,” he said. So when an airport concessionaire approached him about opening a branch of Root Down — his eclectic, farm-to-table restaurant — as part of a major retail overhaul at DIA in 2013, he decided to take the risk. “I thought it would be cool to make a statement about accessibility to craft food that’s…

United, the largest carrier at Denver International Airport, spent more than $145 million on the new building. The airline said the addition to the 23-acre campus in northeast Denver will allow it to conduct more than 32,000 training events annually and train up to 860 pilots daily. The training center, which United said is the largest…

Target looks to bring larger store format to Tower Road near Denver airport

Retail giant Target is eyeing a new store along Tower Road near Denver International Airport, according to a developer’s website. Illinois-based Kensington Development shows a “proposed Target” in online maps of “Link 56,” a project the firm wants to build at the northwest corner of Tower and 56th Avenue. The site is currently undeveloped. The store would be about 150,000 square feet, according to plans submitted to Denver. Most Target stores are about 125,000 square feet, but the retailer announced in 2022 that it was…

Six companies notify state that they plan layoffs

A half dozen companies operating in the state informed the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment of their layoff plans as January came to a close. In total, the companies are letting go of 378 workers up and down the Front Range, from Fort Collins to Pueblo, according to Worker Readjustment and Retraining Notification Act notices filed with the state between Jan. 25 and Jan. 31. The largest job reduction, at 124 employees, came from Axiom Healthcare Services out of Wichita, Kan., which is closing its Flatirons…

DIA will replace parking shuttle contractor under $371 million deal

Denver International Airport will bring in a new shuttle operator next year to transport passengers and employees to and from its parking lots after the City Council on Monday approved a contract potentially worth $371 million. LAZ Parking Midwest will replace replacing DIA’s longstanding contactor, which missed goals for on-time service every day for three straight years before the pandemic, city auditors found. DIA’s contract with LAZ will start in February 2025 and stands as the airport’s largest single operations…

Colorado Supreme Court throws out Adams County noise case against DIA

The Colorado Supreme Court on Monday dismissed an aircraft noise violations case against Denver International Airport that had prompted a lower court to award $33.5 million to Adams County and other plaintiffs. The high court concluded that Adams County’s 2018 lawsuit against DIA was filed 20 years too late. The county and other participating communities, including Aurora, alleged that the airport had been underestimating its noise impacts on surrounding communities for years by using a method that violated an…

United expects the trend to continue this year. A daily nonstop flight from…

What’s the worst thing about Denver International Airport? Vote.

Denver International Airport opened in 1995 and has since evolved to become the third-busiest airport in the world. All that traffic has led to years of updates and additions, such as the $2.1 billion Great Hall terminal renovation project underway now. On Feb. 6, the airport officially opens its new West Security Checkpoint, which comes after nearly six years of construction. A second new security checkpoint is expected to open in late 2025.
