NASA picks three companies to develop lunar nuclear power systems

and the Department of Energy have awarded contracts to three companies that are designing concepts to . The agencies will award Lockheed Martin, Westinghouse and IX around $5 million each to fund the design of a fission surface power system, an idea that NASA has been working on for .  The three companies are being tasked with developing a 40-kilowatt class fission power system that can run for at least 10 years on the lunar surface. NASA hopes to test the system on the Moon as soon as the end of this decade. If the…

Physicists Successfully Develop Atom Laser That Can Stay On Forever

A team of physicists from the University of Amsterdam has recently developed an atom laser that can last forever. Inside a commonly used laser such as in measuring devices and CD players, all the light vibrates in sync. When it comes to an atom laser, it works on the concept of the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). The condensate was created in labs around 25 years ago and enabled scientists to make atom lasers that could emit beams of matter. However, the lasers could be operated only for a short time as the laser…

Scientists Identify Molecule That Cuts Appetite, Lowers Obesity in Mice; Could Help Develop ‘Workout Pill’

Physical exercise offers a wide range of benefits for the human body. Scientists might now be closer to figuring out how to deliver the benefits of exercise in just a single pill. Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine have identified a molecule produced after an intense regimen of physical exercise, which is responsible for reducing both food intake and obesity in mice. Understanding how these physiological processes work could one day help in the development of a medication for people unable to get enough…

Porous Solar Cells Could Help Scientists to Develop Better Pacemakers

In a bid to use solar energy more efficiently to power medical devices, scientists have innovated a new method to develop solar cells that could help build better pacemakers. Expanding the potential of solar cells, scientists from the University of Chicago incorporated holes on the top layer of the solar cells, making them porous. They found that the holes could improve the technology and in turn be used in making less-invasive pacemakers. The current method to make solar cells requires two layers. Here, either silicon is…

Scientists Develop “Nanomachines” That Can Penetrate and Kill Cancer Cells

A research team from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology has developed ‘nanomachines,’ which use mechanical molecular movements to penetrate and destroy cells. Selective cancer cell penetration is also possible by using a latch molecule released near cancer cells.Researchers have created ‘nanomachines’ that use mechanical molecular motions to enter and destroy cells.Cancer is a condition where some of the body’s cells grow out of control and spread to other bodily regions. Cancer cells divide continually,…
