Doom runs on E. coli cells in mind-blowing science experiment

It’s crazy to think of how far video games have come since the original Doom release in 1993. But, as iconic of a game as it is, what has even become more iconic than the game itself is getting it to run on tons of different things. In fact, we’ve seen Doom play on a myriad of things. And now, some scientists have even managed to run Doom on E. coli cells.Yes, you read that correctly. This is Doom running on E. coli bacteria

MIT biotech researcher Lauren “Ren” Ramlan has run the iconic computer game Doom using gut bacteria. It’s not doing the running of the game, per se, but it is running (barely) on a display inside a cell wall made entirely of E. coli bacteria. The researcher dosed the bacteria with fluorescent proteins to ensure they lit up like digital pixels, reaching a heady 32x48 resolution. In their paper, Ramlan says “To run Doom, all one needs is a screen and willpower,” mentioning Doom running on the digital display for a pregnancy…

Here’s a video of Doom running on gut bacteria, proving you really can play the game on anything

An MIT biotech researcher has been able to run the iconic computer game Doom using actual gut bacteria. Lauren Ramlan didn’t get the game going on a digital simulation of bacteria, but turned actual bacteria into pixels to display the 30-year-old FPS, as reported by Rock Paper Shotgun.Specifically, Ramlan created a display inside of a cell wall made entirely of E. coli bacteria. The 32x48 1-bit display may not win any resolution awards, but who cares, right? It’s Doom running on bacteria. The researcher dosed the bacteria…

Latest Peregrine updates spell doom for spacecraft

On January 12, Peregrine finally reached lunar distance. Of course, the Moon wasn’t there, as the spacecraft’s original trajectory had a much different timeline. Now, though, the spacecraft is barreling back toward Earth, and while the team is sure it could keep it from burning up, Astrobotic’s latest Peregrine update says that it is safer to let the spacecraft re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up.In the latest update, Astrobotic talked more about the company’s ongoing mission to make the Moon more accessible.…
