40 Years Ago, Apple Got Our Current Tech Dystopia Dead Wrong

We are all the sledgehammer, Apple does like to tell its fans. We are all disruptors hurtling toward one great screen, breaking the iron-fisted hold that other tech firms want to impose on us. The hellscape dystopia world of Apple’s famed “1984” commercial modeled after George Orwell’s seminal dystopia 1984 never really came to pass. As silly as it is to say, Apple was right. We didn’t win some nebulous liberation, exactly. We won a whole different soup of tech-based dystopia. The M3 MacBook Pro: Made Dark for…

Netflix’s The Kitchen turns London into a cyberpunk dystopia in new trailer

Netflix is kicking off 2024 with a vision of our dystopic future. The streamer just released a new trailer for The Kitchen, which imagines a near-future version of London, complete with reckless biker gangs and lots of holographic displays to complete the cyberpunk look. The film is helmed by Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya (who also serves as co-writer and co-producer) and starts streaming on January 19th, 2024.According to Netflix’s description, in this version of London “the gap between rich and poor has been…

The Shift review – camp biblical sci-fi is multiverse dystopia based on Book of Job | Film

There are things to like about this faith drama: it has ambition, it doesn’t always go in the direction you expect it to go, and it’s got character actor Neal McDonough playing a villain, which is a good thing. It also stands out by virtue of its rarity – I can’t remember the last time I saw a dystopian sci-fi movie based loosely on the Book of Job.Emphasis on “loosely”, mind you. Director Brock Heasley’s version of the biblical story sees wealthy financier Kevin (Hallmark fave Kristoffer Polaha) lose everything at least…

The Ballad of Songs and Snakes’ Made Me Nostalgic for YA Dystopia

Eight years after The Hunger Games finale, director Francis Lawrence returns to the director’s chair for the fifth and final entry. Lawrence apparently absorbed all types of critical feedback, because The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes presents the series at its most confident and comprehensive.  Set 64 years before the trilogy, this prequel to Suzanne Collins’s sensational young adult dystopia unravels Coriolanus Snow’s descent into tyranny, of the ruthful choices that would one day lead to his…

What's it about? A dystopia, naturally. "The Ferryman" hit shelves last week from Penguin Random House."I didn't sit down and say to myself, 'I'm going to write another dystopia,'"…

Apple TV+ Silo Opening Credits Feel Like HBO’s Westworld

As a fan of Hugh Howey’s books, I am quite excited to watch Apple TV+’s live-action adaptation of the hit sci-fi series Silo, about the remnants of humanity who have been living in an underground bunker for so long they’ve forgotten why they’re there. But Apple has just revealed the opening credits for the adaptation, and I couldn’t help but note they seem a little... hmm. Just listen—and watch—for yourself. The Rings of Power | First FandomsHere’s composer Atli Örvarsson’s opening to Silo:Silo — Opening Title Sequence |
