Gory and Entertaining Horror Reboot

It was risky for Evil Dead Rise, the latest entry in a series that set the standard for “cabin in the woods” horror, to choose a Los Angeles high-rise as its principle setting. But that risk pays off in writer-director Lee Cronin’s new film, which balances reverence for Sam Raimi’s classic with an entertaining exploration of its own turf.Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard Nerd Out About Jurassic Park's Returning HeroesAfter a prologue that does involve a cabin in the woods—wink!—we plunge into the story of Beth (Lily…

Fun, Gory Sci-Fi Action Comedy

We’ve seen kids vs. aliens as a plot device many times over. But Kids vs. Aliens, a gleefully violent sci-fi comedy from director and co-writer Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun), just might be the ultimate execution of the idea. At just 75 minutes, there’s barely a second wasted as a pack of rowdy middle-schoolers (and one teen sister) fight for their lives against invaders of both the extraterrestrial and all-too-human kind.Doctor Strange 2's Sam Raimi on America ChavezSam (Phoebe Rex) and Gary (Dominic Mariche) are…

Renfield review – gory fun as Nicolas Cage gets his teeth into Dracula | Film

The 1988 movie Vampire’s Kiss, about a lonely lothario with delusions of vampirism, might have flopped at the box office, but it did help to establish Nicolas Cage’s idiosyncratic performance style. Inevitably, he’s now brought his eye-popping instincts and shouty charisma to the role of Count Dracula – with most pleasing results.Cage’s Dracula doesn’t have top billing here, however; that goes to his longtime servant, played as a meek-but-mighty Englishman by Nicholas Hoult. In this telling, Renfield’s bug-eating is the…
