GPUs just broke a 25-year record

The PC graphics card market witnessed notable growth in the fourth quarter of 2023, according to Jon Peddie Research. With shipments climbing by 6% to reach 76.2 million units, this surge marks a significant 24% increase year over year, representing the most substantial gain in over 25 years. Projections indicate a continued upward trend, with an expected 3.6% annual growth rate from 2024 to 2026, potentially culminating in a total installed base of 5 billion units by the end of 2026, with discrete GPUs comprising…

Nvidia is the GPU cartel, says former AMD Radeon manager

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends AMD’s former senior vice president and general manager of Radeon has come out with some strong words against Nvidia. Scott Herkelman called Nvidia “the GPU cartel” in response to a story from the Wall Street Journal in which Nvidia’s customers claim that it delays GPU shipments in retaliation for those customers shopping with other suppliers. The accusation in question comes from Jonathan Ross, CEO of AI chip startup Groq, who said, “a lot of people that we meet with say that if Nvidia…

Best GPU deals: MSI, XFX, EVGA

The latest generation of graphics cards has really caused a lot of controversy, especially with the RTX 40-series cards becoming so expensive and raising the general cost of GPUs across the board. That means even AMD cards are a bit pricey nowadays, especially if you go to the higher end, so if you’re aiming for a powerful gaming PC, you’re going to have to spend some extra cash. That said, we’ve done our best to go out there and find the best GPU deals on the market so that you can save a bit extra, especially if…

NVIDIA’s RTX 500 and 1000 Ada GPUs bring more AI smarts to thin and light workstations

Just ahead of , unveiled its latest laptop GPUs and, what a surprise, they’re designed largely to assist with AI processing. The RTX 500 and 1000 Ada Generation graphics cards are primarily for thin and light laptops. While they won’t offer as much TOPS AI performance as current higher-end mobile GPUs, they could be a handy option for on-the-go AI processing for the likes of researchers, content creators and video editors. It's worth noting they're workstation GPUs rather than ones designed for gaming. the GPUs, which…

Nvidia Chat with RTX lets you run LLMs locally on RTX 30 and 40 series GPUs

Nvidia has released the Chat with RTX application for Windows. It can run two large language models (LLMs), Llama 2 and Mistral, right on RTX 30 series and RTX 40 series graphics cards and answer your queries about the content, such as documents, photos, and videos, that you connect to the app. It can also load transcriptions of a YouTube video and using that, it can answer your queries about the video. Basically, Chat with RTX allows you to run LLMs locally on your PC without the need for the internet, which, according…

Next-Generation GPUs Shape Immersive Experiences

One of the most exciting aspects of next-generation GPUs is their ability to render incredibly detailed and lifelike graphics in real time. This advancement is a game-changer for industries like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and gaming, where the demand for more immersive experiences continues to grow. These new GPUs don't just offer better visuals; they also provide improvements in energy efficiency, computing power, and AI integration, making them more versatile and sustainable.  As computing technology…

RTX GPUs now come with a local AI chatbot. Is it any good?

Nvidia It’s been difficult to justify packing dedicated AI hardware in a PC. Nvidia is trying to change that with Chat with RTX, which is a local AI chatbot that leverages the hardware on your Nvidia GPU to run an AI model. It provides a few unique advantages over something like ChatGPT, but the tool still has some strange problems. There are the typical quirks you get with any AI chatbot here, but also larger issues that prove Chat with RTX needs some work. Meet Chat with RTX Here’s the most obvious question about…

Why I’m feeling hopeful about Nvidia’s RTX 50-series GPUs

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends I won’t lie — I was pretty scared of Nvidia’s RTX 50-series, and I stand by the opinion that those fears were valid. They didn’t come out of thin air; they were fueled by Nvidia’s approach to GPU pricing and value for the money. However, the RTX 40 Super refresh is a step in the right direction, and it’s one I never expected to happen. Nvidia’s most recent choices show that it may have learned an important lesson, and that’s good news for future generations of graphics cards. The price of…

CableMod’s adapters damaged up to $74K worth of Nvidia GPUs

Humble-Brilliant-654 / Reddit CableMod’s adapters were meant to fix the problem of melting connectors on Nvidia’s top GPU, the RTX 4090, but it appears that things didn’t go as planned. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has posted a notice that the CableMod 12VHPWR angled adapters are being recalled due to fire and burn hazards. More than 25,300 adapters are to be returned, and the affected customers are eligible for a full refund. The connectors on the RTX 4090 have been melting ever since the GPU hit the…
