Still Alive! NASA’s InSight Lander Waits Out Martian Dust Storm

NASA’s InSight Mars lander took this final selfie on April 24, 2022, the 1,211th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. The lander’s solar panels have become covered with dust since the lander touched down on Mars in November 2018, which has led to a gradual decline in its power level. NASA’s InSight Lander Hunkers Down as Martian Storm Moves In

The InSight mission on Mars is currently waiting out a continent-size dust storm that has caused the lander’s power levels to drop.InSight landed on Mars in November 2018 and has since been taking seismological datathat has keyed scientists into the planet’s internal structure. The intrepid lander has detected over 1,300 Marsquakes (including the largest quakes ever detected on another planet) and taken its fair share of images of the Martian surface. But since it landed, InSight has been struggling with dust buildup on

MIT Biologists Glean New Insight Into Repetitive Protein Sequences

MIT researchers used a technique called dot-plot matrix, which is a way to visually represent amino acid sequences, to compare protein sequences known as “low-complexity regions” across many different species. Credit: Courtesy of the researchers, and edited by MIT News.Computational analysis reveals that many repetitive sequences are shared across proteins and are similar in species from bacteria to humans.Approximately 70 percent of all human proteins include at least one sequence consisting of a single amino <span…

Unlocking the Mysteries of Brain Regeneration – Groundbreaking Study Offers New Insight

Neuron generation trajectories. Credit: BGI GenomicsThe first-ever axolotl stereo-seq gives new insights into brain regeneration.Because of its distinctive and adorable look, the axolotl Ambystoma mexicanum is a popular pet. Unlike other metamorphosing salamanders, axolotls (pronounced ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl) never outgrow their larval, juvenile stage, a trait known as neoteny. It’s also recognized for its ability to regenerate missing limbs and other tissues including the brain, spinal cord, tail, skin, limbs, liver, skeletal…

NASA says InSight Lander’s survival relies on Martian weather now

The tales surrounding NASA’s InSight Lander have been quite the rollercoaster. From glitches in the lander to dust-caked solar panels, the Martian research craft has been put through the wringer. Earlier this year, NASA shared that InSight was dying and that the space agency had no plans to save it. Now, InSight’s survival is fully dependent on the Martian weather, sources tell Space.com. NASA’s InSight Lander took its last selfie on the Martian surface earlier this year. Despite being caked in Martian dust…

NASA’s InSight Lander Captures Meteoroid Impacts on Mars

The meteoroid exploded into three pieces upon entering the atmosphere, leaving behind at least three craters, seen here highlighted in blue.Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of ArizonaNASA’s InSight Lander has recorded some exciting new data: The sounds of meteoroids impacting the surface of Mars. This is the first time that InSight has caught such an event, and the sound of a space rock slamming into the Red Planet is not quite what you’d expect. The InSight Lander has quite literally kept its ear to the ground since

NASA lander ‘hears’ first impact sounds of space rocks on Mars

NASA's InSight lander has detected impact sounds from four space rocks that crashed on Mars in 2020 and 2021. It marks the first time seismic and acoustic waves from an impact have been detected on Mars. A new paper published in Nature Geoscience details the impacts, which ranged between 85 and 290 kms from InSight's location, a region of Mars called Elysium Planitia. The first of the four confirmed meteoroids made the most dramatic entrance: It entered Mars' atmosphere on September 5, 2021, exploding into at least three…
