Nintendo is changing some microtransactions in ‘Mario Kart Tour’

Nintendo will be removing its gacha elements (essentially randomised in-game items or cosmetics for real money) from its mobile racing spin-off Mario Kart Tour.  While microtransactions will still be present, players will be able to purchase items directly instead of having to blindly pump money into the game to receive randomised goodies. This was confirmed via the official Twitter account for the game, with the update set to arrive October 4. Additionally, Battle Mode will also be coming to the Mario Kart Tour in a…

Dubbed a “vehicular capture the flag gameplay mode for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive,” players can fire rockets at opponents, jump, and do a slam attack form the air to both capture and secure flags (via Dot Esports). Check out a short clip of CS:GO Kart from the self-proclaimed “two random…

The Morning After: Celebrating 30 years of ‘Mario Kart’

Released in 1992, a few years after the Super Nintendo console, Super Mario Kart was an odd proposition: Nintendo mascot Mario, his friends and enemies all get in go-carts, racing around flat, pseudo-3D tracks. It all seemed so silly, but Super Mario Kart was a critical and commercial hit, and became a formative gaming experience for many of us.  Nintendo As we shake our heads in disbelief that it’s already been 30 years, we're sharing some of our memories of a game that’s now older than a lot of our readers – and even…

Mario Kart: The Agony And The Anguish Of The Blue Shell

Mario Kart is celebrating its 30-year anniversary today, August 27, 2022. Below, we take a look at one of the most controversial power-ups in video games, the infamous Blue Shell. There is no single item in all of video games as hated and feared as Mario Kart's Blue Shell, aka the Spiny Shell. Though it didn't debut with the original game on the Super NES, the item has become a recognizable icon and a part of the series' identity. It is the ultimate equalizer, representing not just a single mechanic in a…

‘Mario Kart’ is 30 years old, if you can believe that

Released a few years after Super Nintendo, Super Mario Kart was an odd proposition: Nintendo mascot Mario, his brother, friends and enemies get in go-carts, racing around flat, pseudo-3D tracks based on some very familiar Mario worlds. The weapons included turtle shells, fire flowers and, er, bananas. They’re all linchpins of the Mario Kart experience now, but at the time, compared to the more buttoned-up racing games of the 1990s, it all seemed so silly. And fun. Super Mario Kart was a critical and commercial hit, with…

Nintendo recap: Alleged sexual harassment at Nintendo of America and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe LAN mode discovered

Hello and welcome to this week's Nintendo recap. It wasn't all good news in the last few days, as we learned of some alleged sexual harassment and gender inequality issues experienced by Nintendo of America contractors. While it's uncomfortable to talk about, it's important to know what's happening with our favorite company. In other news, the internet exploded when it was discovered that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a LAN party mode that allows up to 12 players to play together locally. We also know that information…

Mario Kart 8 DLC Wave 2 Reviewed and Ranked – Destructoid

Starring Wendy O. Koopa When Nintendo said the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass would last until the end of 2023, it meant it. It’s been nearly five months since the first wave of DLC was released, and while I’ve enjoyed the time I’ve spent driving through the likes of Coconut Mall and Ninja Hideaway, I’m ready for something new. With the release of Wave 2 of the Booster Course Pass, new is exactly what we’re getting. One of the courses featured in the Turnip Cup and Propeller Cup is new to the Mario Kart…

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s new DLC tracks are more (or less) of a good thing

Nintendo is now a third of the way through its ambitious DLC plans for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the ultra-popular kart racer that was released for the then-new Nintendo Switch over five years ago. Back in March, it announced it would be releasing a total of 48 new tracks for the game over the course of six “waves,” consisting of eight tracks each. But the first wave, released back in March, felt a little basic compared to the highs of the base game, and often it was all too obvious which courses were based on content from…
