Common Blood Pressure Drug Extends Lifespan, Slows Aging in Animals : ScienceAlert

The hypertension drug rilmenidine has been shown to slow down aging in worms, an effect that in humans could hypothetically help us live longer and keep us healthier in our latter years.Rilmenidine was picked for this latest study because past research has shown it mimics the effects of caloric restriction on a cellular level. Reducing available energy while maintaining nutrition within the body has been shown to extend lifespans in several animal models.Whether this translates to human biology, or is a potential risk to…

Capgemini and AWS announce technology platform to improve the lifespan of aircraft parts

At the International Paris Air Show (SIAE), Capgemini and Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the launch of Lifecycle Optimization for Aerospace. This platform aims at accelerating the adoption of circular economy practices in the aviation industry by automating the inspection process, optimizing lifecycle analysis of aircraft parts, and guiding decisions to extend their lifespan. Several major players in the aviation sector, including Air France and Safran, participated in its development and will be amongst the first…

Charge-Check is a tiny $30 box that supposedly adds years to a phone’s lifespan

The battery remains one of the most problematic smartphone components, regardless of whether it’s an iPhone or an Android device. We worry about battery life constantly despite upgrades in capacity and charging speeds. And battery life degrades over the years, which can be problematic if you intend to keep your phone for more than two years. But a tiny box called Charge-Check might be here to save the day. The $30 device sits between the power adapter and the smartphone to ensure that your device never reaches…

Researchers Find Oxygen Restriction Extends Lifespan

In a new study, researchers discovered a link between reduced oxygen intake and longer lifespan in lab mice, highlighting the potential of “oxygen restriction” in anti-aging. Mice bred to age faster, when moved to an oxygen-restricted environment (11% oxygen, similar to the oxygen level at an altitude of 5000 meters), lived about 50% longer than mice in normal oxygen conditions (21%). This extended lifespan was not due to changes in food intake, suggesting other mechanisms are at play.  Further research is needed to…

The Protein That Could Extend Human Lifespan in a Warming World

New research indicates that lifespan in warm climates is not just passively shortened due to increased metabolic rate but is also actively regulated by a nervous system protein called NPR-8, which controls collagen expression. They found that worms lacking this protein had increased collagen expression in warmer temperatures, thereby exhibiting increased stress resistance, fewer age-related skin wrinkles, and a longer lifespan, suggesting that the underlying mechanism could potentially be used to extend human lifespan…

This $30 gadget claims to add years to your phone’s lifespan. Here’s how

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNETOvercharging is bad for the lithium-ion batteries inside your devices. This issue is why companies like Apple have introduced charge optimization features to their devices. But many devices don't have these kinds of protections -- and their batteries can suffer if they are left on charge for extended periods. Now, Canadian firm LAVA Computers has a simple and low-cost gadget that claims to add years to your device's battery life. This research is crucial for understanding…

Enhancing fuel cell lifespan via catalyst selection

<Left> In the given picture, hydrogen spillover is depicted, wherein TiO2 undergoes transformation into TiOOH under high hydrogen concentration conditions, which promotes hydrogen mobility on the surface and consequently produces conductivity.<Right> The picture demonstrates that under relatively low hydrogen concentration conditions, the strong interaction between Pt and TiO2 leads to the covering of Pt by TiO2. There’s a New Plan to Relocate Hubble Space Telescope and Extend Its Lifespan

Like any satellite in Earth orbit, the Hubble Space Telescope is sinking, and it’s been doing so for the past 33 years. A proposed solution from two space startups offers an intriguing strategy for safely boosting Hubble’s orbit, allowing NASA to extend the lifespan of its storied observatory. Astronomers Could Soon Get Warnings When SpaceX Satellites Threaten Their ViewHubble is currently healthy, but atmospheric drag will eventually cause it to re-enter our planet’s atmosphere at some pointduring the mid-to-late 2030s.

Scientists Engineer Longevity in Cells With a Hack That Extends Lifespan : ScienceAlert

Our cells naturally degrade over time, which is part of the reason we're not as mobile and sprightly aged 80 as we are aged 8. Now scientists have figured out a way to boost cell lifespan and longevity using a synthetic genetic 'clock'.Researchers from the University of California San Diego based their findings on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, making it unlikely that humans might live forever any time soon – but the team thinks that the work could be developed to eventually help the human body age in a healthier…
