Skinamarink review – childhood fears and bogeyman resurface in viral lo-fi horror | Film

This experimental lo-fi horror debut became a mini viral sensation last year after accidentally being leaked online. Terrorised TikTok users called it “the scariest film ever made”; critics reached for comparisons with The Blair Witch Project and David Lynch’s Eraserhead. I have to admit to being underwowed, finding Skinamarink a little undeserving of its newly acquired cult status. That said, there is without a doubt something uncanny, almost seance-like, in the way Canadian film-maker Kyle Edward Ball evokes childhood…

beats to pop/lob to Rocket League‘s winter event Frosty Fest is back, and this time, it’s with a collab that no one saw coming, but now that it’s here I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the holidays. That’s right, everyone’s favorite cars-playing-giant-soccer esports game is teaming up with the Lofi Girl of YouTube fame. Her music on the iconic “lofi hip hop radio – beats to relax/study to” YouTube stream has gotten us through countless work days and sleepless nights of studying, and now, her calming beats will…

A Polarizing Lo-Fi Sci-Fi Gets Stranded in the Streaming Cosmos

Not to be confused with a certain Denis Villenueve blockbuster adaptation that arrived almost exactly one year later, 2020’s Dune Drifter opted to tell a sprawling sci-fi story on a much smaller scale, albeit one that ended up putting critics and crowds in staunch disagreement with one another. On Rotten Tomatoes, writer and director Marc Price’s intergalactic adventure holds a perfect 100 percent score, while the user rating is in such vehement opposition that the film has been voted down to a miserly 37 percent…

Chill indie Melatonin offers lo-fi beats to game and relax to

When I sit down to play a game, I don’t always want a loud or challenging experience. Sometimes I just want to chill out. I’ll often sit on the couch before going to bed and unwind with something low-stakes, so I value any truly laid-back experiences that put me in a trance. In that case, is it any surprise that I’d vibe with a game called Melatonin? The new indie release is a short, but sweet rhythm game about a restless dreamer. Its striking visual style immediately caught my attention when I first saw it, but its…

Sonicware’s latest groovebox is made for lofi beats

You know that lofi beats have taken over when companies are designing entire instruments around them. Sonicware has introduced the Liven Lofi-12, a groovebox devoted to producing subdued tracks. The machine centers around a 16-bit, 12/24kHz sampling engine with a 12-bit sampler mode that gives any sound that "genuine" lofi vibe. You can't just recreate the effect with a bit crusher or similar tools, the company claims. You'll also find a "laid-back" knob to introduce a delay, as well as 11 track and eight master effects…

Complex CG Created Lo-Fi Animations

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah gave Ms. Marvel a look and energy never before seen in a Marvel TV series or movie, one that was deliberately meant to appear influenced by the young Avengers fan who also happened to be the show’s protagonist. But bringing a teen’s whimsical doodles to life apparently required the skills of an Academy Award-winning visual effects studio. The series’ opening sequence helped set the tone for the rest of the season of Ms. Marvel while firmly establishing Kamala Khan’s obsession with

Teenage Engineering gets in a lo-fi groove with the PO-80 Record Factory

Back in 2020, designer Yuri Suzuki teamed up with Japan's Gakken to launch a dinky little box that allowed young music-makers to cut a vinyl disc in a matter of minutes and play it back through the same device. Now Suzuki has partnered with Sweden's Teenage Engineering for an update. The PO-80 Record Factory comes in kit form for home assembly, and very much rocks the look of a child's toy. Once put together, the PO-80 works much the same as the Instant Record Cutting Machine before it.An audio device like a smartphone or…

Chill alongside jellyfish with Monterey Bay Aquarium’s lo-fi videos

When Avi Silver settles into work each morning, they usually put a YouTube video titled “2 Hours Of Chill Shrimp To Work/Study/Relax” on their living room TV.“It has shrimp, it’s great, it’s so relaxing,” they said. “And then at the one hour and 22-minute mark, it gets inexplicably funky for about four minutes, and then goes back to being chill. It’s a whole experience.”Silver, who works in publishing from their home in Hamilton, Canada, is one of the millions of people who have streamed the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s…
