AMD low-end CPUs might cost you GPU performance

AMD announced a new set of desktop CPUs during CES 2024, but it looks like the latest low-end options will cost you some of your PC’s performance. According to reports spotted by Wccftech, the new AMD low-end CPUs will offer PCIe 4.0 x4 functionality for GPUs and PCIe 4.0 x2 for M.2 lanes. This means that the new Phoenix 2 specs will essentially half the performance capabilities for M.2 SSDs and discreet graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia, like the newly announced Nvidia 40 Super Series. It’s disappointing to…

Cyberpunk 2077 just pulled the rug out from under low-end PCs

Cyberpunk 2077 has always ranked high in the list of the most demanding games you could play on a PC. The upcoming Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion was bound to push the limits even more. However, now we know that it’s not just the new release that’s going to require more power from your PC. The base game is also receiving an update to the minimum system requirements, and by the looks of it, many people might need to upgrade their computers in order to play comfortably. CD Projekt Red, the studio behind …

Xiaomi's Redmi unveiled a whole bunch of new devices yesterday - the Redmi Note 12, Redmi Note 12 5G, Redmi Note 12 Pro, and Redmi Note 12 Pro+, that is. And yet, the sub-brand has also recently made another two handsets official, albeit in this case very quietly, by simply adding them to the Mi global website. We're talking about the Redmi A2 and Redmi A2+, and these are much, much lower-end than the others. The Redmi A2 has a 6.52-inch 720x1600 touchscreen, it's powered by the MediaTek Helio G36 SoC paired with…

Low-end Motorola handset gets 3C and TENAA certifications

Motorola will probably announce a bunch of new smartphones very soon, judging by all the certifications lately. The supposed Motorola Edge 40 Pro passed through TENAA and FCC this month, which will likely be accompanied by the vanilla Motorola Edge 40 as well. Today, 3C and TENAA listings surfaced, suggesting a third, another Motorola smartphone is in the pipeline. In both documents, the phone is referred to as XT2335-3. As usual, the 3C listing doesn't reveal much, but the TENAA one has a few key specs for us. The…

Two-piece con rods claimed to boost low-end engine torque by 30%

Utah's Transcend Energy Group claims it has a relatively simple and cheap way to dramatically increase the torque output of combustion engines, simply by replacing the standard connecting rods with new two-piece designs with a secondary joint. As the pistons in an engine move up and down, driven by expanding gases as the air and fuel burn, connecting rods, or con rods, transmit the linear force of the pistons into a rotating motion of the crankshaft. The small end links to a gudgeon pin in the back of the piston, with a…

Intel drops the Celeron and Pentium names for its low-end laptop CPUs

Intel has used the Celeron and Pentium brands for CPUs since the 1990s, but they're finally fading away — if not quite in the way you'd expect. The company is replacing both brand names for low-end laptop chips in favor of the simpler (if not exactly creative) "Intel Processor" badge starting in 2023. The move will help "simplify" the lineup, Intel VP Josh Newman said. The Core, Evo and vPro labels will stick around. Intel didn't say how it will handle branding for desktop processors, which still include Celeron and…
