Kioxia Slashes 3D NAND Production as SSD Sales Plummet

Kioxia said it would cut down production of 3D NAND memory at its fabs located at its Yokkaichi and Kitakami sites. Demand for PCs and many other devices is slowing due to high inflation rates, geopolitical tensions, and macroeconomic factors, producers of commodities like 3D NAND want to reduce inventories and avoid oversupply, so they have to cut down production. Kioxia said it would reduce its wafer starts by approximately 30%, starting from tomorrow. However, a 30% reduction of wafer starts does not automatically…

US Lawmakers Concerned About Apple’s Decision to Use YMTC’s 3D NAND

Adding another 3D NAND maker to its supply chain is certainly something that is good for Apple, but U.S. legislators are not particularly happy that one of the world's largest consumer electronics companies will use memory from YMTC and thereby essentially help China's semiconductor industry to develop. Apple argues that it plans to use chips from Yangtze Memory only for iPhones to be sold in China. Apple has been evaluating the use of 3D NAND from YMTC for months now, and last week a report emerged that the company…

Micron’s 232-layer 3D NAND changes the storage game forever

This content was produced in partnership with Micron. In the wide world of computing, sometimes there’s innovation you can see — like a processor that’s larger than others with increased capabilities, or a super thin laptop chassis with a powerful machine housed inside — and sometimes there’s innovation you cannot see. For the latter, that innovation tends to be happening inside the core of another piece of technology. Take solid-state drives, for example, which have grown increasingly thinner, albeit with larger…

Apple to Buy 3D NAND Memory from Chinese YMTC

Apple has reportedly approved 3D NAND flash produced by Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp. and will now use it for its upcoming iPhone 14 smartphones. The move represents a strong win for YMTC and will ensure steady supply of flash memory for Apple's next-generation products. For now, Yangtze Memory will supply Apple 3D NAND for its upcoming iPhone 14 handsets, reports BusinessKorea. Smartphones are Apple's most popular products, so Apple needs boatload of DRAM and NAND for its smartphones. But eventually Apple could…

SK Hynix to invest $11 billion in new South Korea chip plant

SK Hynix Inc, the world's second-largest memory chip maker, said that it will invest 15 trillion won ($10.9 billion) over the next five years to build a new chip plant in South Korea. Construction of the facility, called M15X, will begin in October and be completed early 2025 in Cheongju, south of Seoul, SK Hynix said in a statement. The plant will make memory chips, but whether it will be DRAM chips or NAND flash chips will be determined according to market conditions, a company spokesperson said, declining to comment on…

Samsung may release its first 236-layer NAND flash chips this year

Last updated: August 17th, 2022 at 15:05 UTC+02:00 Samsung might release its first NAND flash memory chips with more than 200 layers before the end of the year, increasing the stack from the current 176-layer limit. Samsung has remained the market leader and aims to maintain its position above rivals like SK Hynix, Micron Technology, and Kioxia. The Korean tech giant will reportedly release 236-layer NAND flash chips before the end of the year. To achieve this, Samsung is also planning to establish a new R&D…

Solidigm Introduces Industry-First PLC NAND for Higher Storage Densities

Solidigm, the NAND research and manufacturing arm sold by Intel to SK hynix, took to the Flash Memory Summit 2022 to showcase a finished and working SSD prototype carrying the company's latest NAND technology: Penta-Level Cell (PLC). PLC builds upon NAND density by adding the capability for a single cell to store up to 5 bits of data (up from QLC's four bits per cell), increasing the amount of available space in each NAND flash chip. The new technology thus paves the way for even cheaper $/GB ratios on PLC-based SSDs than…

United States Considers Crackdown on CHIP Makers in China

Photo: Imaginechina (AP)The U.S. is apparently moving on two fronts to try and create an edge for itself in the chip-making market. One is to try and emphasize American chipmakers with billions of dollars in funding. That could be years and years before we even see a change in the market thanks to new factories, however, the White House is also thinking that sticking its foot out to trip up Chinese chip makers going at full sprint may give it enough time to get its own chip capacity up to speed.A Monday report from

Micron’s 232-Layer NAND Paves Way for 200TB SSDs

Memory and data storage producer Micron have begun production and shipment of the world’s first 232-layer NAND in Singapore, which marks the first time a NAND manufacturer has surpassed 200 layers. This opens the door for the world’s first 200TB SSDs. For comparison, even the flashiest personal computers usually stop at 2TB of storage, and the current largest SSD in the world is Nimbus Data’s 100TB ExaDrive.Prior to the innovation, the company’s NAND topped out at 176-layers. The new NAND is also 50% faster than Micron’s…

Samsung, Micron Warn China’s Xian Lockdown Could Affect Memory Chip Manufacturing

Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology, two of the world's largest memory chip makers, warned that a COVID-19 lockdown in the Chinese city of Xian could affect their chip manufacturing bases in the area.Micron said on Wednesday the lockdown could lead to delays in the supply of its DRAM memory chips, which are widely used in data centres. It said the stringent restrictions, which went into effect earlier this month, may be increasingly difficult to mitigate and had resulted in thinner staffing levels at its…
