Huawei oversells unrealistically thin Mate X3 bezels, pushes proprietary memory cards

Huawei announced that its latest attempt at rivaling the Galaxy Z Fold series is coming to China this week. Indeed, the Huawei Mate X3 was just announced in China today, and the initial impressions are positive, in that the phone seems to tick many right boxes required by a Z Fold contender. However, it’s also backed by fake official renders and pushes a proprietary expandable storage format developed by Huawei. First, let’s have a quick look at the positives. Samsung was the first to bring water resistance to foldable…

Tesla is offering its proprietary charge connector as a new North American standard

When it comes to charging your EV in the US, Canada and Mexico, the only two connector types available aren't cross-compatible. Tesla has its J1772 connector, which in the company's defense was developed when Tesla was still the only EV game in town. Everybody else uses the current North American standard, the Combined Charging System (CCS). Tesla apparently hopes to upend that dynamic, announcing Friday that it is "opening our EV connector design to the world."   Tesla is releasing its specs and production designs for…

Denver is the home Meta’s proprietary communications network

Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and the other brands that operate under the Meta Platforms umbrella are known for helping people connect socially. But connecting people on social networks requires a reliable physical network that can move vast amounts of information along fiber-optic lines and through data centers. Since November 2018, the team that controls the physical infrastructure linking billions of people worldwide has worked out of an office in lower downtown Denver at 1900 16th St., west of where the Mall shuttle…

Google’s proprietary Pixel Watch app now online

Google launched the Pixel Watch yesterday and the wearable comes with Wear OS 3.5. The new user interface does not work with the old Wear OS by Google Smartwatch, meaning this device got its proprietary app. The application is now listed at Google Play only - it won’t pair with iPhones, because the Watch requires phone with Android 8.0 or newer, Google Account, and internet access. We can see from the uploaded screenshots users will be able to customize the watch face and what info to receive on it, there will be…

Debian Linux accepts proprietary firmware in major policy change

Debian has always offered a choice of installation images that included proprietary software, but these were also labeled as experimental. This decision makes proprietary software officially part of Debian. The Debian community knows exactly what it's doing. In September, the group voted on incorporating non-free firmware in Debian. This vote, like all Debian community decisions, was done with the Condorcet method. The winning option, Proposal E, Choice 5, clearly stated it superseded the Debian Social Contract.

Apple no longer activates its proprietary SIM cards for iPads with cellular data

You may need to perform some extra legwork to connect an earlier iPad to cell networks. MacRumors has learned the company stopped activations for the Apple SIM in certain iPads as of October 1st. If you're affected, you'll have to either contact your carrier (and likely obtain a SIM card) or use an eSIM in newer tablets. This won't affect you if cell service is already enabled. Apple included a conventional SIM with cellular versions of the iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, 5th- and 6th-generation base iPads and the…
