Fox News & Daily Mail Ridicule Gender Queer Pronouns, But Only So Far

| Time Magazine gave an interview to Maia Kobabe over eir graphic novel, Gender Queer: A Memoir, which has been hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons, and occasionally the right ones. Kobabe identifies as non-binary, prefers the use of non-binary pronouns e/em and eir, and eir journey towards that is much of what the graphic novel is about. The interview occurred after an obscenity case brought against em and eir publisher Oni Press and bookstore Barnes & Noble by Republican politicians, was dismissed by…

That was…

Queer indie-pop trio Muna makes the most of a second chance

Ask any music or fashion aficionado: Between low-rise jeans, thundering nü-metal bass lines and the renaissance of Britney Spears, Y2K nostalgia is taking off.Yet not all Y2K throwbacks need reviving, say the members of Los Angeles indie-pop trio Muna. Between the ubiquity of rape jokes in popular movies and TV, not to mention the unceremonious outings of then-closeted celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Lance Bass of ‘N Sync, “we were being sold back this idea of ourselves,” says Katie Gavin, 29, lead vocalist of Muna.…

Pride at the End of the World

Protesters wave a Pride flag in front of the Supreme Court a day after the Court struck down Roe v. Wade.Photo: Roberto Schmidt/AFP (Getty Images)I hesitated to come out. It was 2020 when I finally, finally started to see my queerness through the clouds. The world was burning (still is), suffering through a global pandemic (still is), reeling from a societal upheaval (still is), and American fascism was gaining strength at a terrifying speed (I repeat myself). The fact that I was suddenly going to start dating girls

Superman, Robin, and Wonder Woman are DC’s new queer characters… sort of

On Oct. 11, 2021, the Man of Steel came out of the closet. “Superman comes out as bisexual; ‘not a gimmick,’ writer says,” blared the Reuters headline. “Why ‘Bisexual Superman’ Has Conservatives’ Tights In a Twist,” declared Forbes. And sure enough, the outrage was swift, sharp, and depressingly predictable. Less than a month after DC announced the character’s forthcoming revelation, police were dispatched to the homes of writer Tom Taylor and artist John Timms after threats were made to the comics company. Meanwhile,…

What We Do in the Shadows Paved the Way for Our Flag Means Death

Image: FXThere’s a moment in the new season four trailer for FX’s What We Do in The Shadows where the vampires’ neighbor asks, “What’s the word for what you guys are?” When Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) responds “Polyamorous?”, the neighbor says, “No, I was kind of thinking like dirty hippies.”For stalwart viewers of What We Do In The Shadows (and even longtime fans of the franchise, which began in 2014 with the film of the same name), this kind of causal explanation of the house’s relationships is nothing that we don’t
