Challenging the whiteness of queer organizations

Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain Pride parades were established to commemorate the strife experienced by gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and trans people at the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City's West Village. Parades worked their way into Canada to help celebrate queer life across two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex and asexual (2SLGBTQIA+) communities and ignite social change.…

Enigmatic, transgressive, gleefully queer: the 1970s cult film you’ve never seen | Film

The late 1960s and early 70s was a fecund time for US cinema, but not every revolutionary film from that period has achieved the hallowed status of a Mean Streets or a Badlands. One, at least, has been lost for almost half a century. Emerging out of San Francisco’s countercultural Haight-Ashbury scene, Luminous Procuress is an enigmatic, transgressive and gleefully queer journey to the divine state of enlightenment lurking just beyond the carnal. And you can’t say that about The Godfather.Steven Arnold’s first and only…

Big Queer Beerfest and other brewery events that support LGBTQ causes

June is Pride Month and among the myriad of places to tap into the celebration are breweries, which are hosting events, releasing specialty beers and pouring donations into Colorado’s LGBTQ community throughout the month. At Denver’s second annual Big Queer Beerfest on June 18, for example, drinkers will find 35 breweries serving unique recipes for a variety of causes. The event, founded in 2021 by the female- and queer-owned businesses Goldspot Brewing and Lady Justice Brewing, raised more than $6,000 for organizations…

Fire Island film review: A sweet, queer romcom that takes aim at Jane Austen’s ‘hetero nonsense’

Dir: Andrew Ahn. Starring: Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers, Margaret Cho, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, Zane Phillips. 105 minutes. What’s more radical: reimagining the canon or getting rid of it altogether? That’s the lingering question of Fire Island, a queer, modern-day update of Pride and Prejudice – one which, in its very first scene, dismisses Jane Austen’s marriage plot as “hetero nonsense”. The romcom, written by and starring comedian Joel Kim Booster, doesn’t quite make the most of its conceit. On a…

Queer Rep and Star Wars

Image: Photograph by Aaron Epstein/HBO Max“I knew my character was going to be the queer one,” Vico Ortiz said in our interview last week. “I’m used to being the queer one.” Ortiz is speaking about their role in the hit pirate comedy, Our Flag Means Death. Their character, Jim (shortened from their last name, Jiminez), is a transgender, nonbinary, Latine person who uses they/them pronouns… just like Ortiz. The thing is though, Our Flag Means Death doesn’t just have one queer character. Ortiz wasn’t the queer one, but one

‘I could have both nips out and it would be fine’: Flesh, the UK’s first queer camping music festival | Music

For all the promise of gender equality on lineups, UK music festivals are still dominated by male artists – a BBC study last week found that only 13% of headliners at top festivals this year are women – and many of them are white, straight and cisgender. But down a gravel path in St Albans lies an alternative.Hosting house and techno artists, Flesh festival – held last weekend – bills itself as the UK’s first queer camping music festival, with a lineup where women, trans and non-binary artists make up more than 90% of the…

Girls’ School: Taiwanese queer gem is hopelessly devoted to teenage passions | Film

Love is a many-splendoured thing in Lee Mi-Mi’s Girls’ School, a Taiwanese gem from 1982 beautifully restored just in time for its 40th anniversary. Screened in the UK at BFI Southbank as part of Queer East, an LGBTQ+ film festival showcasing lesser-known treasures from east and south-east Asian cinema, Girls’ School is a time capsule of social attitudes towards homosexuality in 1980s Taiwan at the meeting point between commercial and arthouse film-making.As a site of surveillance, tempestuous impulses and healing…
