How BYD grew from a phone battery maker to EV giant taking on Tesla

Chinese automaker BYD had one of the biggest stands at the IAA show in Munich, Germany in 2023.Arjun Kharpal | CNBCElon Musk dismissed BYD in 2011 by laughing at their products during a Bloomberg interview."Have you seen their car?" I ordered a bubble tea by drone in Shenzhen

I found that the reality of drone delivery is still far from ideal, and people may be turned away by the steep learning curve. But at the same time, it was an exciting experience—the prospect of routine drone delivery feels more realistic than it’s ever been. Meituan currently operates more than a hundred drones from five delivery hubs (or launchpads) in the city. Together, they completed over 100,000 orders in 2022. While the platform itself can deliver basically anything, from dinner to medicine to fresh flowers to…

Food delivery by drone is just part of daily life in Shenzhen

The workflow is a mix of human and automated labor. Once the drone delivery system gets an order (customers order specific items marked for drone delivery in the company’s app), a runner (human) goes to the restaurants, all located a few flights down in the shopping mall, to pick up the order and brings it to the launchpad. The runner places the food and drinks in a standardized cardboard box, weighs it to make sure it’s not too heavy, seals the box, and hands it off to a different worker who specializes in dealing with…

Inside Tencent’s weirdly secretive customer service center

One of my stops in China was Shenzhen, the southern city that’s home to many Chinese tech companies, like Tencent, Huawei, and DJI. If you didn’t know, the first software that launched Tencent’s empire was QQ, the go-to instant messaging platform in China during the desktop internet era. From there, Tencent grew into a powerful…

China smartphone shipments slid 11% in Q3: Report

Smartphone shipments in China fell 11% year-on-year in the third quarter as the country's slowing economy took a toll on consumer demand, research firm Canalys reported. Brands shipped a total of 70 million smartphones to sellers in the period, down from 78.9 million in same period last year. While Apple Inc was the only brand to buck the trend, with shipments jumping 36% to 11.3 million, analysts say that the surge was due to demand for the iPhone 14 Pro model, and demand for the basic iPhone 14 model has been weak.
