Palm Springs ran out Black and Latino families. Some seek reparations

At first, Joe Abner would come home from school and find a single house on fire. A vacant house, toppled by a bulldozer and set ablaze by Palm Springs city firemen. Then two houses would be burning. ”Then it got to the point when you saw smoke, you were pretty well freaked out because you didn’t know if it was your house or one of your neighbors’ houses,” Abner said. “They were tearing houses down right in front of your face.”Now 72, Abner was 13 when his family fled Section 14 in Palm Springs, leaving the home his father…

The Science of Spring’s Green Show

Spring’s burst of brightness comes before chloroplasts grow and mature Credit: Rebecca KonteAdvertisement Every year trees put on a show in the spring by bursting with bright foliage that seems to celebrate the end of winter. What makes these early leaves so vibrant? The color of a leaf is determined by which wavelengths its cells absorb and which they reflect back at us. The chloroplasts inside these cells, which turn sunlight into energy through the process of photosynthesis, tend to absorb more blue and red…

How to win a seat at the best (and most booked-out) restaurant in Palm Springs

My party of two peers around the manicured hedges at the north end of the Plaza Del Sol Shopping Center at exactly 4:30 p.m. It’s nearly dusk on a Sunday in late January. I’m not entirely sure what kind of early crowd I’ll find waiting to score walk-in slots for Bar Cecil, the 75-seat darling of the Palm Springs restaurant scene, but I am determined to dine here tonight. We turn out to be first in the queue. No regrets about showing up extra early, though, because I’ve been through this before at Cecil: By 5 p.m., when…

Atrevida Beer out of beer after supporters flock to Colorado Springs

The kegs have been mostly empty at Atrevida Beer Co., and the brewery’s merchandise is completely sold out. The last few weeks have been among the brewery’s busiest ever, after the Nov. 19 mass shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs focused international attention directly on its owners, Jess and Rich Fierro and their small business. “We’ve had an incredible amount of support,” Jess said. “It’s been overwhelming in the most beautiful way.” The Fierros and daughter Kassy were at Club Q that night attending a drag show when…

Forest Service recreation plan in Steamboat Springs area draws fire

A plan long in the works to respond to demands for more mountain-biking trails in the Steamboat Springs area is being criticized as not taking enough steps to protect one of Colorado’s largest elk herds. The Routt National Forest released a draft environmental assessment and proposal for the Mad Rabbit trails project in October and will review the comments and feedback before issuing a  preliminary decision, possibly by April or May. People will then be able to file comments and objections before a final decision is…
