Kids’ Cartoons Get a Free Pass From YouTube’s Deepfake Disclosure Rules

YouTube has updated its rulebook for the era of deepfakes. Starting today, anyone uploading video to the platform must disclose certain uses of synthetic media, including generative AI, so viewers know what they’re seeing isn’t real. YouTube says it applies to “realistic” altered media such as “making it appear as if a real building caught fire” or swapping “the face of one individual with another’s.”The new policy shows YouTube taking steps that could help curb the spread of AI-generated misinformation as the US…

YouTube’s Picture-in-Picture Mode Could Be Available for Non-Premium Users Outside the US Soon

YouTube started rolling out its PiP (Picture-in-Picture) feature for a wider audience back in 2021. This popular feature of the video streaming app allows users to watch videos while accessing other apps on their device. YouTube users in markets outside the US require a Premium subscription to access the PiP functionality. But this could change in the future as multiple posts on social media platforms indicate that non-premium users in Europe are currently getting access to YouTube's PiP…

YouTube’s picture-in-picture feature could soon be available for free globally

YouTube’s picture-in-picture mode was released in 2017 when Google introduced the Android Oreo version. At the time, the PIP feature was available for just those with a subscription to the YouTube Red premium service. However, in 2022, the company started allowing free users to access the PIP feature, but only in the US. But this could be changing soon as multiple Redditors across Europe without YouTube premium subscriptions can access the PIP mode for free. YouTube’s picture-in-picture mode is reportedly available for…

YouTube has hit a new milestone with its Music and Premium offerings. The paid services have more than 100 million users between them as of January, including those who were on a free trial. That's an increase of 20 million members in just over a year, and the figure has doubled since September 2021. YouTube has successfully grown the figures despite a $2 per month increase for Premium that came into force last summer. It's unclear how many people are actually using YouTube Music (Premium includes access to that service).…

YouTube’s video games are almost impossible to find – but once you unearth them, you’ll wish you never looked | Games

I am trying out YouTube Premium’s games, but I can’t find them. I assumed I would boot up the app and there would be a big red button saying GAMES … but no. I have to sign up to PREMIUM. Then find the YOUR PREMIUM BENEFITS section. Then find EXPERIMENTAL FEATURES and select TRY EXPERIMENTAL FEATURES. Then find the TRY GAMES ON YOUTUBE part therein and tap on TRY IT OUT. There is an EXPLORE tab and a SEARCH tab just to make things as intuitive as dadaist poetry. I go through more menus than an entire series of Ramsay’s…

YouTube’s Playables games are now available for Premium subscribers

YouTube is branching out into games — at least for its paid subscribers. The platform is giving Premium users access to a set of online games that can be directly played on either the mobile app or desktop app. Known as “Playables,” the company first debuted the experimental feature to select users in September. As noted by Droid-Life, YouTube sent a notification last week to Premium subscribers informing them of Playables and allowing them to try it out. Those who opt in will be able to play a total of 37 mini-games that…

YouTube’s fight against ad blockers led to ‘sub-optimal’ viewing

YouTube started cracking down on ad blockers earlier this year, but it escalated things this month when it locked out anyone trying to watch YouTube through apps, add-ons and extensions that skip its ads. It’s even affected a lot of YouTube viewers not using workarounds though, with Firefox or Edge users reportedly having to wait around five seconds every time they load a video. In screen recordings shared on Reddit and other online forums, users show how their screen goes blank for a short period when they click on a…

YouTube’s ad crackdown could cause ‘suboptimal viewing,’ Google admits

Google is pushing a YouTube ad crackdown to convince users to buy into its premium services to remove ads instead of relying on ad blockers. It’s part of an ongoing fight by Google and many other companies to get users to drop their ad blockers. Google’s latest attempt appears to be causing issues for some users, and the company even said it may cause “suboptimal viewing” experiences if you’re using an ad blocker. The fight against ad blockers isn’t exactly a new one. Whether you’re trying to avoid all the…
