Telegram Tops 100 Mn Downloads In Q1 2021, Tiktok Remains Most Downloaded App
Privacy-focused messaging platform Telegram emerged as the fifth most popular app with over 100 million downloads on Google Play Store and Apple App Store in the March quarter, analytics firm Sensor Tower said in a report. The increase in downloads of the Telegram app can be attributed to the growing dissatisfaction of users with Meta apps.
The Sensor report said the number of app installs globally on App Store and Play Store reached 37 billion and despite the bans in key markets such as India, TikTok continued to be the most popular app in the world with over 175 million downloads during the quarter and became the fifth app to cross 3.5 billion all-time downloads.
Meta, formerly known as Facebook Inc., accounted for over 600 million app downloads. Instagram was the most accessed Meta app with over 160 million downloads, down 7% quarter-on-quarter.
Other Meta apps in top five include Facebook with over 150 million downloads, while WhatsApp was in fourth position with 125 million downloads. Though WhatsApp was popular due to its network effect, users are increasingly looking at alternative messaging apps such as Telegram and Signal, which seek relatively less data from its users.
