Adobe has unveiled Generative Fill co-pilot in Photoshop which brings Adobe Firefly generative AI capabilities into design workflows. The company, which is known for its suite of creative software, claims that Generative Fill is the world’s first co-pilot in creative and design workflows.
The tool enables users to add, extend or remove content from images in seconds by using simple text prompts. It is to be noted that this is a beta release and the company will soon integrate Firefly across (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Lightroom), Document Cloud (Acrobat Reader and Adobe Scan), Experience Cloud (software for analytics, advertising, and media optimisation) and Adobe Express.
Adobe Firefly is a family of creative generative AI that will allow content creators to generate high-quality images and text effects by providing text inputs. Launched in March this year, Firefly is claimed to have become one of the most successful beta launches in Adobe’s history, with beta users generating over 100 million assets. Since its launch, Adobe has had Firefly support for vector recolouring and generative fill.

“By integrating Firefly directly into workflows as a creative co-pilot, Adobe is accelerating ideation, exploration and production for all of our customers,” said Ashley Still, senior vice president, Digital Media at Adobe.
Photoshop’s Generative Fill feature is available in the desktop beta app and will be generally available in the second half of 2023. Generative Fill is also available as a module within the Firefly beta app.
“Generative Fill combines the speed and ease of generative AI with the power and precision of Photoshop, empowering customers to bring their visions to life at the speed of their imaginations,” Still added.

In simple terms, Generative Fill is a tool that will allow users to extend images and add or remove objects from an image. Adobe explains that Generative Fill automatically matches the perspective, lighting and style of images that enables users to quickly get desired results while reducing tedious tasks.
One of the features of Generative Fill is that it can edit an image ‘non-destructively’ which means that creators generate content in generative layers which enables them to quickly implement ideas without impacting the original image.
The company also said that Generative Fill supports Content Credentials, which serve as a means to ensure that people online know that a particular content was created by a human, AI-generated or AI-edited.
