At I/O 2023, Google announced several AI-first experiments, including Project Tailwind. It explained the project as a “new kind of notebook designed to help people learn faster.” The company has now announced that it is beginning to roll out Project Tailwind with its new name.

NotebookLM from Google Labs
NotebookLM is an experimental offering from Google Labs and the company said that the product will make note-taking smarter for consumers. It accesses user’s freeform notes and automatically organises as well as summarises them using AI technology.

It will be immediately available to a small group of users in the US and others can sign up to the waitlist to try it out. The AI tool is aimed at college students, writers, researchers, analysts and lawyers, the company had said previously.

“We know people are struggling with the rapid growth of information — it’s everywhere and it’s overwhelming. As we’ve been talking with students, professors and knowledge workers, one of the biggest challenges is synthesising facts and ideas from multiple sources. You often have the sources you want, but it’s time consuming to make the connections,” the company said.

Difference between NotebookLM and traditional AI chatbots
The key difference between NotebookLM and traditional AI chatbots is that the former enables users to “ground” the language model in specific notes and sources.

“Source-grounding effectively creates a personalised AI that’s versed in the information relevant to you,” the company said.

Grounding is the process or technique in which an AI language model uses the available, relevant information that is not a part of the LLM’s trained knowledge. The process is crucial for delivery of the quality, accurate and relevant responses.

NotebookLM in Google Docs
Initially, users who get access can ground NotebookLM in specific Google Docs and do three things:

Get a summary: When a Google Doc is added to NotebookLM, it will automatically generate a summary, highlighting key topics.

Ask questions: Users can ask questions for a deeper dive into the documents you’ve uploaded and get a better understanding of the material.

Generate ideas: NotebookLM is also being developed to help some people come up with creative new ideas. For example, a content creator can ask the AI model for new videos by saying, “Generate a script for a short video on this topic.”

Google also advises that NotebookLM’s source-grounding does seem to reduce the risk of model “hallucinations,” it is advised to fact-check the AI’s responses against original source material.
