WhatsApp fixes issue that caused outage globally: All the details

WhatsApp has said that it restored connectivity issues that caused outages affecting thousands of users globally. Users complained that they had problems accessing the messaging app.

Users, including some members of The Times of India-Gadgets Now team, were unable to send messages around 2 am. According to outage tracking website Downdetector.com, the problems started at around 1.20 am, peaked at 1-2.06 am and the app’s functioning was back to normal levels by 3 am.

Here’s what the company has to say
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, said on the status dashboard that it was experiencing disruptions “receiving incoming messages and message delivery on Whatsapp”.

“The fix for receiving incoming messages and message delivery on WhatsApp has been deployed and this issue is now mitigated. Thank you for your patience,” the company later said.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp also posted that it was “working quickly to resolve connectivity issues with WhatsApp” and it later announced, “and we’re back, happy chatting!” WhatsApp hasn’t provided any information on what caused the outage.

At one point, there were more than 43,762 reports on Downdetector.com wherein people reported issues with sending messages (61%), app (35%) and website (4%). Nearly 15,000 users in India said they faced trouble while using the messaging app.

Twitter outage
Earlier in the same day (June 19), Twitter suffered a brief outage with people reporting that they were unable to view tweets and were served a “Cannot retrieve tweets at this time” message. Others said that their feeds were not loading on the app.

The Downdetector website which tracks outages across the internet showed a spike and suggested that the problem was global. About 50% of people experienced problems with apps, 39% on the web and about 11% reported server connection problems.
