You can now start using Telegram without a SIM card

Telegram app has received a new update, and some new features along with it. The main addition to this Telegram has something to do with your SIM card, as it’s no longer necessary. You can now sign up for a Telegram account without a SIM card.

Needless to say, this is a massive change. Many messaging services like WhatsApp and Viber sign you up via a SIM card. That kind of prevents you from using many of those services on more than one smartphone. That’s the main drawback, many would agree. Another drawback comes down to backing up your conversations. It’s just not as seamless as what you get with Facebook Messenger, for example, in most cases, at least.

Telegram did not move to a normal log in, or anything of the sort, though. So it won’t exactly be on the same playing field as some other services, and privacy may have something to do with that. So, how did the company decide to handle this? Well, if you don’t want to go with the SIM method, you can log in using blockchain-powered anonymous numbers available on the Fragment platform.

This is not the only change, though. Telegram also launched the option to auto-delete all chats. You can opt to have them deleted after 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, or you can set a custom time.

Topics 2.0 have also been added

This update also brings ‘Topics 2.0’ to the table. Administrators of groups with 100 or more members can now organize discussions into topics. They now have a two-column structure for easier usage.

Telegram Topics 2 0

A maximum of five topics can be pinned to the top of the list. The badge counters for topics you’ve never opened will have a lighter color. A General Topic is now added by default, by the way, and admins have the ability to rename the General Topic.

Telegram also added an aggressive anti-spam filter for groups. Admins can also help out by reporting any false positives in Recent Actions.

You can now keep your phone number hidden when adding contacts

Telegram also introduced QR codes for keeping your phone number hidden. This comes in handy if you don’t have a username, and you don’t want people to know your phone number. You can generate a temporary QR code. People who scan it will be able to add you as a contact without finding out your phone number.

Detailed storage usage has also been added to the Android version of the app. It will show you how much space each chat uses. You’ll also be able to see detailed storage info for images, videos, audio, and files.

New emoji have been included

New custom emoji are also a part of this update, and the same goes for new interactive emoji.

That being said, this update is marked as v9.2.0 on Android, and it started rolling out to Telegram users globally. It may take a bit of time to reach your device, though, as it’s rolling out in stages.
