Zoom has been introducing AI-powered features on the platform for some time now. In the recent development, the company has launched Intelligent Director which is aimed at enhancing connection and optimising the conference room experience for hybrid work.

The feature uses multiple cameras to analyse the meeting participants and do AI processing to “give every participant their own space in Zoom Meetings”.

“For hybrid meetings with a Zoom Room, Intelligent Director uses AI and multiple cameras to provide the best image and angle of participants in the room so remote participants can see each person clearly, even in large conference rooms,” the company said.

For example, there are 10 people sitting in a conference room and talking to their manager on video. The Intelligent Director will use the multi-camera setup in the conference room to identify the number of participants and crop one large frame into smaller windows to present it in a way that all participants are seen clearly.

The viewer on the other side will be able to see each participant in their own separate windows instead of looking at a bunch of people sitting in a room.

“Even with some employees in the office, oftentimes other team members are dispersed, so meeting equity and inclusion become more important than ever. Intelligent Director is the solution that can bring employees together, regardless of location,” said Smita Hashim, chief product officer, Zoom.

The new feature is an upgrade of Zoom’s Smart Gallery feature, which uses a single camera and AI to give each person a window in a small-to medium-sized room.

The Intelligent Director feature is specifically designed for medium- to larger-sized rooms. According to Zoom, the feature can individually frame up to 16 participants in a Zoom Room.

It explains that in big-sized meetings, some participants can be hidden when using a single camera, hence Intelligent Director uses a multi-camera configuration.
