Since taking charge of Twitter, Elon Musk has made several alterations to how certain features operate on the microblogging platform. Recently it was reported that Elon Musk wants to bring encryption to Twitter DMs (Direct Messages). It appears that now the microblogging platform has released its first version.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk took to the platform to inform the users that the company has pushed encryption to Twitter DMs. However, Musk has also asked the users to stay cautious. “Early version of encrypted direct messages just launched. Try it, but don’t trust it yet,” tweeted Musk.

Available for Twitter Blue users, the encrypted messages feature on Twitter presently has some conditions and limitations. The encryption function is not enabled by default and requires users to opt-in to use it. Moreover, only verified individuals, such as businesses on Twitter, government officials, or Twitter Blue subscribers, can access encrypted DMs.

On the other hand, according to an online report by Wired, the encrypted messages on Twitter do not offer full-proof protection and can be attacked. The report adds that the messages are open and can be manipulated by third parties. Also, Twitter has not called the messages end-to-end encrypted as WhatsApp does. Also, the encryption of messages does not work for group messages and visual media.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk also announced recently that Twitter is working to incorporate voice audio calls on Twitter. It is expected that with the inclusion of voice and video calls Musk aims to give tough competition to apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and more.
