Google introduced a new Chrome feature on March 21. This feature was designed to “guard against users with way too many bookmarks in sync.” The latest change in Google’s popular web browser has reportedly restricted the number of bookmarks that users can access on multiple devices while being logged into the same Google account. According to a report by Android Police, the tech giant has introduced a limitation on the number of bookmarks that can sync across multiple devices.
How users are affected
A Reddit user MartyMacGyver has reportedly hit the bookmark limit in Google Chrome. Users have reported that after reaching the bookmark limit, websites that are saved on one device aren’t syncing with other devices which are also logged into the same Google account.
Google hasn’t confirmed the number of bookmarks that will sync across devices. However, as per a bug report for the situation has revealed that bookmarks are limited to 20,000 for mobile devices and 100,000 for Chrome on desktops. The web browser is also not warning users about the limit or when they are approaching the same. Users are getting to know about the bookmark limit once they start facing the syncing issue.
In such cases, you can visit the Chrome settings page — chrome://sync-internals, if you suspect a syncing issue. On this page, the browser will show users an error message for Bookmarks under the Type Info section in the About tab.
Why Google is adding such restrictions on Chrome
In an attempt to make the browser even faster, Google might be adding such changes. Syncing too many bookmarks not only takes time but also may freeze the UI by offering a slower user experience.

The report also claims that Google might also be planning to prevent users from accessing the bookmark sync feature without a paid subscription in the upcoming days. The bookmark limit which is currently available may seem enough, but this restriction is reportedly affecting several users.
This includes people who have been using Google Chrome for a long time now and has already accumulated thousands of bookmarks. Some users have also tried bypassing the limit by switching enabling and disabling sync, but that didn’t help.
How Google should handle this issue
Google may create an opt-in Chrome flag unlocking sync which can be activated after a certain limit. The web browser should at least show users a warning if they reach the maximum number of bookmarks that can be synced. This will remind users to delete unnecessary bookmarks and free up space for newer ones.
