Microsoft Xbox game store coming ‘soon’ to counter Google, Apple

0 41

Microsoft is talking to partners that will help the company to help it launch a mobile gaming store. This store will compete with Apple and Google, said Phil Spencer, who leads the company’s Xbox video-game division.

“It’s an important part of our strategy and something we are actively working on today not only alone, but talking to other partners who’d also like to see more choices for how they can monetise on the phone,’’ Spencer said in an interview, as per BNN Bloomberg.

“I don’t think this is multiple years away, I think this is sooner than that,’’ he added.

How Xbox store could help Microsoft

Microsoft may be able to use the resentment against Apple and Google, who do not allow third party stores on their platforms and charge up to 30% cut for transactions, to support its store offering.

“We’ve talked about choice, and today on your mobile phones, you don’t have [a] choice. To make sure that Xbox is not only relevant today but for the next 10, 20 years, we’re going to have to be strong across many screens,’’ Spencer said.

Activision Blizzard deal
The first instance of Microsoft’s plans to compete with Apple and Google first came to fore during its case with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) on the approval of the largest gaming deal in history. The company told the UK’s antitrust regulator that it plans to offer gamers an option other than Apple and Google.

Microsoft recently acquired video game publisher Activision Blizzard, which has already explored doing something similar. Recently, in the Epic vs Google case, documents suggested that the Call of Duty maker was already looking to circumvent Google Play store to open a store with Epic Games.

Spencer has already noted that he was motivated in part by Activision’s strong presence in mobile gaming with a large portfolio of games, including Candy Crush and Call of Duty Mobile. He said the deal was necessary to boost the company’s relatively small footprint in the $90 billion mobile-gaming market.
