Google is expected to announce multiple hardware and software improvements at its annual developer conference. The Google I/O 2023 event is scheduled to be held on May 10. During this event, the tech giant is likely to unveil the Pixel 7a mid-range smartphone and the Android 14 operating system. Apart from this, the company is also rumoured to debut the Pixel Tablet at the event. This much-anticipated tablet was teased by Google during last year’s I/O 2022 conference. However, the Pixel Tablet is yet to get a release date and is speculated to be released in 2023.

According to a report by 9to5Google, the upcoming tablet has arrived for FCC certification. Just like the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro, the Pixel Tablet is also set to feature ultra-wideband (UWB) connectivity, the FCC listing reveals.

What is the FCC listing
Companies that manufacture devices with a wireless connection have to get them approved by various regulatory agencies around the world to bring them to the market. FCC is a US-based regulatory agency which also certifies devices that support wireless connectivity.

As per the report, a new Made by Google device turned up in the FCC’s database. The device has arrived with the model number GTU8P. The latest Google product is listed with three connection standards — Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and UWB. Considering the absence of cellular connectivity, the GTU8P is expected to be the Google Pixel Tablet. The report doesn’t mention a tentative launch date for the upcoming tablet

How Google will use UWB in Pixel Tablet
UWB connectivity on the Pixel series allows owners to use their phones as a digital car key. However, Google might be planning to use UWB on Pixel Tablet to work with the “Tap to Transfer” system.

Google is working on this feature for Android which is already available in the Apple ecosystem. This feature enables iPhone users to “hand off” media to a HomePod. The report claims that the company is also developing a new Nest speaker which is also likely to feature UWB hardware.

The report doesn’t mention whether the UWB support in the Pixel Tablet will be designed to receive signals (Cast music on the tablet directly from their phone), send them (Cast music on the speaker from the tablet), or both.

Google may also use UWB for its upcoming Finder Network. This feature will help users to more precisely locate lost gadgets/items.

Pixel Tablet battery details: What to expect
Rumours also suggest that the Pixel Tablet may support 18W charging. The upcoming tablet is also likely to arrive with a docking station which will be able to support 30W chargers. However, the report doesn’t mention if the dock will be able to relay more than 18W to the tablet.

The charging dock is also speculated to work as a loudspeaker as well. This feature will help the Pixel Tablet to turn into a smart display.
