New EPA Methane Rule Will Slash Emissions from Oil and Gas

CLIMATEWIRE | More U.S. oil and gas operations will be regulated for methane than ever before under sweeping new federal standards, which for the first time cover petroleum infrastructure built prior to 2015.EPA Administrator Michael Regan announced the new standards on Saturday at the COP28 climate talks in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The final rule aims to deeply cut methane emissions by requiring equipment upgrades and regular leak inspections.“These new standards will help us meet our international commitments to…

Intel says AMD’s Ryzen 7000 is snake oil

Intel In what is one of the most bizarrely aggressive pieces of marketing material I’ve seen, Intel is comparing AMD’s Ryzen 7000 mobile chips to snake oil. Over the weekend, Intel posted its Core Truths playbook, which lays out how AMD’s mobile processor naming scheme misleads customers. There’s an element of truth to that, which I’ll get to in a moment, but first, the playbook. Intel starts with claiming that there’s a “long history of selling half-truths to unsuspecting customers” alongside images of a snake oil…

An oil exec, a climate crisis, and reparations: what’s going down at the United Nations summit in Dubai

Tens of thousands of negotiators, activists, and corporate execs have descended upon Dubai to wrangle over the future of fossil fuels. Namely, should they even have a future? Can governments broker a deal to phase out the oil, coal, and gas causing climate change? Countries have already suffered deep losses as a result of the fires, floods, and other disasters intensifying with climate change. They want the biggest, heaviest-polluting nations to do something about it. And they’ll be making their case at a conference…

Jeff Bezos Superyacht Is So Big It Has to Dock With Oil Tankers

Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot superyacht Koru has sailed alongside his fiance’s vessel Abeona. The tall ship is so big it can only sit in port alongside other massive cargo carriers.Photo: Robino Salvatore/GC Images (Getty Images)Jeff Bezos might want to start accepting packages on his 417-foot superyacht as it’s becoming increasingly clear the ship isn’t much good for transporting the ultra-wealthy into the most luxurious ports. Pictures and live data show the Amazon founder has had to park his ship next to an oil tanker as it

Ohio, the state where a river caught fire at least 12 times, just voted to protect oil

The Ohio House has voted on a bill to ensure that the state cannot ban gas-powered vehicles, protecting pollution in a state that has one of the worst environmental legacies in the US. One of the biggest environmental stories in the history of the US was when the Cuyahoga river, which runs through Akron and Cleveland, caught fire in 1969 when an oil slick on the water was set ablaze, damaging a railroad bridge. The fire made headlines and news spread across the country, and the story in some…

Vapor leak on unused pump caused Suncor’s Christmas Eve fire

The Christmas Eve fire that injured two workers at Suncor Energy’s Commerce City refinery began when a vapor cloud leaked from an unused pump valve and exploded as the facility was being shut down after extreme cold caused equipment failures, according to a federal investigation. The vapor was released from a pump that was not functional and had not been used or properly inspected in seven years, according to the report detailing the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration‘s investigation into the accident. The…

Why the UN climate talks are a moment of reckoning for oil and gas companies

In order to be on track for net-zero emissions, the oil and gas industry will need to cut emissions from production and processing t by about 60% by 2030. That’s a huge jump, and one that will cost about $600 billion between now and the end of the decade.  Slimming down production emissions won’t be enough to reach net-zero though, so companies will also need to find ways to pivot and invest money and expertise into new technologies while ramping down fossil fuel production. Reaching the international climate goals set…

Sorry, data isn’t really the new oil

Listening to this, one would assume that all e-commerce companies are making money hand over fist and all physical retail chains are contemplating shutting down. Everyone—from an analyst at a venture capital firm to a student in a B.School—would tell you that an e-commerce company can figure out if you have a baby at home (because you are ordering diapers) and can use this knowledge to get you to buy other baby products. Statements like these are common and sound cool until…
