Deep Green bags £200M to heat ‘hundreds’ of swimming pools with data centre energy

Deep Green has announced plans to heat between 100-150 swimming pools nationwide using recycled heat from data centres — and just landed a heap of cash to get the job done.  The London-based startup installs tiny data centres at energy-intensive sites like leisure centre facilities. Its system turns waste heat from the computers into hot water for the site.  In return, cold water from the centre is used to cool the cloud servers. The idea is that the host site gets free heating generated by…

I walked on, turning back, watching him cross into the shadow of the Bradbury Building, his big coat blowing like a tattered flag. But then came a moment of unexpected tenderness.“I want to sing for you,” said a woman as I headed toward her on the sidewalk.I held out a dollar in hopes of hurrying along.“I want to earn it,” she…

Giant Underground Pools of Water Are Batteries of the Future

In an energy-efficient future, homes may be heated and cooled by pumping from giant pools of water stored underground. A study published this month in Applied Energy looks at how underground aquifers could help significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help store energy produced by renewables. This Summer’s Hottest UmbrellaThe research deals with a technology known as aquifer thermal energy storage, or ATES. Water is a great way to store thermal energy, and the Earth is an efficientinsulator. ATES is simply the
