Tesla phasing out ultrasonic sensors as it moves toward a camera-only system

Tesla has announced that it's phasing out ultrasonic sensors (USS) used in its EVs to detect short-range obstacles, Electrek has reported. While other automakers use LiDAR, radar and other sensors on top of cameras, Elon Musk's company is determined to use only cameras in its Tesla Vision driver assistance system.  It will remove the ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over the next few months, then eliminate them in Model S and Model X models by 2023. They're mainly used for parking and short-range…

“Deep surveillance” system tracks brain tumors from a speck of blood

Brain cancer carries notoriously high mortality rates, but lately we’re seeing how blood tests could improve patient outcomes by picking up the disease in its earlier stages. The latest comes in the form of a highly sensitive biosensor likened to a “deep surveillance” system, which can detect and pinpoint the location of tumors from less than a drop of blood.Scientists have started to make some promising inroads when it comes to blood tests for cancer, which promise an accurate and minimally-invasive form of diagnosis…

The Metaverse Needs an Operating System

If you’re an old git like me you’ll remember heading to the newsagent, slapping down some coins, and running home to code a game by hand from the pages of a computer magazine into a Sinclair Spectrum or Amstrad CPC-464 in BASIC or machine code if you were (un)lucky. (if you’re even older then you’ll remember Assembly and punchcards and god loves you for it)Invariably it would never work the first time but for many of us, that was the introduction to software engineering or games development we had. It felt like the golden…

TRAI to Propose Unified KYC System to Check Fraudulent Callers: Chairman PD Vaghela

Telecom regulator TRAI will propose to set up a unified know-your-customer system, which should be accessible by all telecom operators, to check fraudulent callers and spammers, a top official said on Sunday.Speaking at India Mobile Congress, TRAI Chairman PD Vaghela said it is difficult to find the actual culprit at present who has indulged in fraudulent calls and messages for which the regulator is exploring several mechanisms to resolve the issue."There should be a unified KYC (know-your-customer) system. Players aren’t happy with ‘Overwatch 2’’s new mobile verification system

A new, compulsory verification system for Overwatch 2 is excluding huge swathes of players because it’s incompatible with pay-as-you-go or pre-paid mobile phones. Speaking about the new system for Battle.net, Blizzard explained that: “This additional layer of security is an industry-proven solution in combating both cheating and disruptive behaviour, further protecting your Overwatch 2 experience from bad actors.” The same announcement goes on to explain that “the same phone number cannot be used on multiple accounts at…

Here’s Why Battery Swapping System for Electric Vehicles May Not be a Good Idea

Currently, India’s automotive industry ranks fifth globally and is expected to rise to third position by 2030. Its total worth is more than $222 billion, within which the EV market is estimated to account for $2 billion by 2023 and $7.09 billion by 2025. The Government has been implementing several programs and policies to encourage the adoption of electric mobility, such as 100 percent FDI through the automotive route in the EV space, incubator programs, shared facilities for prototyping and small-scale manufacturing,…

Eufy launches the next generation of its home security camera system

Smart home company Eufy’s new wireless security camera, the EufyCam 3, bumps up the resolution to 4K and adds a built-in solar panel to extend the year-long battery life even further. But its best features come from the new HomeBase 3 hub the camera connects to wirelessly. This adds local processing of video to send you an alert when it spots a person, pet, or vehicle, plus facial recognition so it can tell you if it’s a stranger or a family member. Another interesting feature is the option to upgrade the storage to as…

Giraffes vs. Blue Whales vs. Dinosaurs: Contest Reveals Which One Builds Its Nervous System Fastest to Evade Predators

Over the course of evolution, immense megafauna have roamed the lands or swum in the seas. The growth of these creatures early in their life is typically quite rapid. It has to be. They need to grow fast or be eaten. Extensive studies on megafauna have addressed the unique challenges of supporting and moving such massive bodies. But the greatest and largely ignored obstacle to extreme growth for both terrestrial and aquatic megafauna may involve the rapid development of their nervous system. Unlike all other cell types,…

REST APIs on Industrial PLCs Part 2: System Health Monitoring | by Peter Lebiedzinski | Sep, 2022

Monitor the health of every device on your systemIntroductionAPIs are great for offloading computation and running processes that are not easily done in a given programming language. In the first part of this series, REST APIs on Industrial PLCs¹, we implemented a simple API that adds and retrieves entries from a SQL database. The data entered into the database is for training a Machine Learning model to detect anomalies in the servo drives connected to the controller. In this example, we will run a basic training loop for…

VW’s Gen.Travel autonomous EV concept features modular seating system

If passengers are traveling in a truly self-driving car, they don't really have to stay in the traditional side-by-side, forward-facing seating position. That's where Volkswagen's Gen.Travel concept comes in, as it allows the seating to be rearranged for different types of trips.Unveiled last weekend at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance auto show near Paris, the all-electric Gen.Travel is a functional prototype, designed to ultimately reach Level 5 autonomy. That means it could operate without any human intervention.VW…
