These two Chinese smartphone brands dominate Russian market after Apple, Samsung’s exit

Apple and Samsung‘s loss has been Chinese smartphone brands gain in Russia. According to the popular consumer electronics shop M.Video-Eldorado, Chinese smartphones dominated the Russian market in the first half of 2023, accounting for more than 70% of all sales. The number is up from approximately 55% in the previous year. With nearly 13 million units sold, overall smartphone demand in Russia is up 17% from the same time last year.

Xiaomi and Realme have become top smartphones sellers in Russia and hold the top two positions in the market. Apple and Samsung do remain available through unofficial or “parallel” imports. They’ve sank to third and fourth spots respectively in the Russian market.

“Brands from China systematically continue to strengthen their presence,” MVideo said in a statement, adding that flagship models and foldable smartphones from Chinese brands were seeing particular demand. Eight out of the 10 best-selling smartphones in Russia in the first six months of this year were Chinese, M.Video said. The change in the smartphone market is also being mirrored on Russia’s roads,

Since the majority of Western brands have officially left the Russian market in early 2022 after the Ukraine war, Beijing has become Moscow’s go-to source for everything from gadgets to automobiles.

No iPhones for officials
The Kremlin has reportedly told officials to stop using Apple iPhones, saying that the Western intelligence agencies have compromised them using surveillance software. Apple, however, has denied those claims.
