Twitter is being sued for non-payment of bills in four countries: Report

0 46

Twitter is already facing lawsuits in multiple countries for non-payment of office rent. It is also sued by ex-employees for not paying severance. In a fresh development, an Australia-based company Facilitate is seeking more than A$1 million (approx $667,700) for work done at offices in four locations.

According to a report, Twitter is being sued after allegedly failing to pay bills for office fitouts in its London, Dublin, Sydney and Singapore offices following the takeover of Elon Musk.

Facilitate Corporation has filed the claim in a court in California, US, alleging that the company had stopped paying invoices for services across four locations.

It claimed that the Sydney-based group had been contracted since 2015 to develop its office spaces in several non-US locations to “Twitter’s satisfaction and Twitter paid its invoices”. But things changed in October when Musk took over.

Here’s what the company has to say
In documents filed with the court, Facilitate alleged that Musk’s moderation decisions, which include banning some accounts and reinstating handles of some people of clout like former president Donald Trump, impacted the company and threw it into “instant financial crisis”.

“On information and belief, Twitter responded with a campaign of extreme belt-tightening that amounted to requiring nearly everyone to whom it owes money to sue,” Facilitate said.

“On information and belief, Twitter stopped paying rent on some of its offices and stopped paying several vendors whose services it was still using. Twitter also cancelled many contracts and stopped paying people to whom it owes money,” the company noted.

According to the company, Twitter hasn’t paid for the services it took between early 2022 and early 2023. During that time, it provided “services to Twitter in London and Dublin for sensor installations as well as a full office fit out construction in Singapore.”

Additionally, when the social media giant shut shop in Australia to cut costs, “Facilitate decommissioned and temporarily stored its office contents.”

The total bill for the works across the locations was more than $1.05 million, which the company claims Twitter was contractually obligated to pay within 60 days of receiving the invoice.

“Following the acquisition, Facilitate corresponded about its outstanding invoices with its remaining contacts at the company. They gave no indication that Twitter disputed it owed the amounts on the invoices and offered no justification for not paying,” the documents filed in the court said.

Twitter has not paid fees in nearly 900 cases
In a separate report, Twitter was sued for allegedly refusing to proceed with nearly 900 arbitration cases filed by ex-employees who were either laid off or quit after Musk took charge of the company last year.

According to this particular case, Twitter has blocked at least 891 cases from proceeding by not paying initial arbitration fees.
