Suppose an individual tries to modify their date of birth on Instagram from below 18 to 18 or above. In that case, they will be prompted to verify their age using one of three alternatives: submitting their ID, capturing a video selfie, or requesting their mutual friends to validate their age.

How do age verification methods work on Instagram
For starters, users can upload a government ID to verify their age. But, there are two new AI-powered methods being introduced. Users can choose to use the video selfie or social vouching for age verification.

By opting for a video selfie, you can verify your age. On choosing this method, the user will need to capture the video selfie, and Instagram will share the image solely with Yoti. Yoti employs its technology to gauge your age based on your facial features and relays that estimation to us. Following this, both Meta and Yoti delete the image.

Yoti states that it uses anonymous images of various individuals from different parts of the world to train its dataset. These individuals have given Yoti transparent permission to use their data and can request Yoti to delete their data at any time. However, in the case of individuals under the age of 13, Yoti has collected data through specific exercises for data collection where parents or guardians have given explicit consent.

Social Vouching enables users to request their mutual followers to verify their age. The individual vouching for the user must be 18 years or above, not vouching for someone else at the time and adhere to other safety measures we have implemented. Users can choose three people to vouch for them, who will receive a request to validate the age and respond within three days.
