WhatsApp adds proxy support to enable messaging during internet blackouts

0 28

WhatsApp is adding proxy support to enable users to stay connected during internet blackouts. The Meta-owned messaging app will let users connect to a proxy server to send and receive messages when the internet is blocked or restricted in their areas. This feature is available globally across all platforms.

According to WhatsApp, proxy connections will maintain the same level of privacy and security you already get. All messages will still be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that no one can see your conversations apart from you and the recipient. Not even the poxy provider. And speaking of proxy providers, WhatsApp encourages volunteers, organizations, and individuals around the world to host proxy servers when possible to help others communicate freely. It has provided a guide here.

WhatsApp is launching this feature shortly after the Iran government blocked access to WhatsApp and Instagram in the country last year to subdue protests following the death of a woman at the hands of local authorities. The company referred to this incident in its blog post announcing the launch of proxy support. “Our wish for 2023 is that these internet shutdowns never occur. Disruptions, like we’ve seen in Iran for months on end, deny people’s human rights and cut people off from receiving urgent help,” it said.

You can connect to a proxy in the latest version of WhatsApp

Proxy support on WhatsApp is now rolling out globally with the latest update for the app. On the Android app, you can find this feature by navigating to More options (vertical three dots on the top right corner of the Chats screen) > Setting > Storage and data > Proxy. No select the Use Proxy option, tap on Set Proxy and enter the proxy address. Finally, tap on Save. You should see a green check mark confirming a successful proxy connection.

If the connection is unsuccessful, maybe the proxy has been blocked or is no longer available. In that case, you’ll have to try a new proxy address. You can long-press the blocked address to delete it. It’s a safe practice to keep multiple proxy addresses saved on your device. You should be able to find plenty of those on the internet once this news spreads globally. Note that the proxy provider can see your IP address. Third-party proxies aren’t provided by WhatsApp.

Along with Android, WhatsApp proxy is also available on the iOS and Desktop apps, as well as the web client. You can click the button below to download the latest version of the messaging app on your Android smartphone from the Google Play Store.
