Zerodha cofounder Nikhil Kamath has signed the Giving Pledge. With this, he joins a number of wealthy individuals across the globe, and committed to donating 50% of his wealth to charitable causes. These include climate change, education, and health care. “I am committed to positively impacting the world. The mission of creating a more equitable society aligns with my values and aspirations,” said Kamath. Zerodha is India’s biggest stock brokerage in terms of volume of trade.
Kamath’s estimated net worth is $3.45 billion. He also has his own foundation, Young Indian Philanthropic Pledge (YIPP), which works with entrepreneurs to donate at least 25% of their net worth to charitable causes.

The Giving Pledge is an initiative founded by Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Melinda French Gates in 2010.

While Kamath is the only Indian among this year’s signatories, there are other Indians on the list who have signed up for this initiative in the past. The names include Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, Wipro chairperson Azim Premji, Executive chairperson and founder of Biocon Limited Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, and Vedanta chairman Anil Agarwal.

All in all, nearly 241 philanthropists from 29 countries have signed up for the Giving Pledge this year. These include LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and Canva co-founders Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht.
